Personal Project: Persons as Plants

Persons As Plants,This project is a representation of Frida’s painting Self-portrait Dedicated to Dr. Eloesser(1940). Frida Kahlo (1907-1964) was a Mexican painter known for her meaningful and introspective artworks.Between 1926, the year she painted her first self-portrait, and her untimely death in 1954, Kahlo produced over one hundred images that explore aspects of her complex identity in relation to her body, to her genealogy, to her childhood, to social structures, to national, religious and cultural contexts, and to nature. (Ankori, G.,2005)In the painting Self-portrait Dedicated to Dr. Eloesser, there are many symbolic elements present, such as hands, thorns, and flowers on top of the head. They each have different metaphors.

Returning to my topic, I focused on the representation of plants. I used Maya for modeling, ZBrush for sculpting model details, and Substance Painter for texturing. I dedicated a lot of attention to sculpting and texturing because I wanted to achieve more intricate details rather than focusing on large spaces and objects. At this stage, that’s what I aimed for. For texturing, I gathered many references and unified them into my own style based on the existing foundation.Regarding the water in the scene, I generated it using Houdini to achieve the splashing effect I desired. However, I haven’t figured out how to make it move yet. I didn’t want the scene to appear too still, so I also added some falling flower petals underneath the splashing water. In my opinion, this is still not enough, but due to technical limitations, I haven’t been able to realize all of my ideas. I wanted to have a dynamic element in the image.

Group Work – Compositor

In this group project, I worked as a compositor. The main responsibilities of a compositor include processing camera data in the pre-production stage, cleaning up the footage by removing green markers used for tracking, remove unnecessary objects, and replacing screens. These tasks are done to prepare for the later compositing work. Before compositing, the compositor also needs to communicate with the CG generalists to ensure accurate camera movements and proper placement of objects. Throughout the collaboration spanning over two months, we had close communication with the CG generalists. Each time Gonzalo provided us with progress updates, he also gave us guidance and suggestions to promptly address any issues and ensure a standardised compositing workflow,It’s very helpful.

Through this collaborative project, I learned a lot about the practical operations involved in compositing and the numerous details that need to be taken into account. Starting from cleanup, we had to handle green markers in different ways in different areas, deal with noise, adjust colours in different areas , and make the visuals harmonious. It was a meticulous job, but we did it!
